Gosport business keeps family tradition alive

By opening a new tearoom in Gosport, Sue Jones and her niece Janet Buxton are continuing a family tradition stretching back more than 70 years.

Dolly's Vintage Tearoom, which opened in Stoke Road next to Christ Church on 12 May, is the latest venture in a family inspired by food.

Sue's grandparents Herbert and Matilda Smith ran a number of cafes in Gosport and Southsea during the 1950s and 1960s, including the London Cafe in North Cross Street and the Tudor Rose Cafe in Forton Road.

It all started from their living room at Hardway in 1944 where they provided meals to Allied soldiers heading off to the D-Day landings in Normandy.

And it's the 1930s and 1940s that have been the inspiration for Sue and Janet's tearoom, with its choice of decor and the atmosphere it has created. It's a recipe that is already attracting rave reviews from visitors.

Sue Jones commented: "The response from customers has been fantastic. Everyone has loved the theme and the relaxing atmosphere. The wonderful feedback has made all the hard work of getting our tearoom up and running so worthwhile."

1. Dolly's Vintage Tearoom is located at 42a Stoke Road, Gosport, Hampshire PO12 1JQ. It is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Saturday. The tearoom is also available to small parties for hire, with staff catering for special occasions or funeral wakes.
